Karan Johar's last directorial effort, Ae Dil hai Mushkil, completed three years of its' release on October 31. The romantic drama featured actors Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan appeared in an extended cameo appearance as a supporting actor. Besides them, actors Fawad Khan and Shah Rukh Khan appeared in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in special appearances.

Since its' release, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has remained popular with film lovers for its deeply emotional and rich storytelling, Pritam's chartbuster soundtrack which fetched him his first-ever Filmfare Award for Best Music Director and the chemistry between the three lead actors.  Karan Johar has stated many times that this film is the closest to his heart. In Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, both Ranbir and Anushka portray obsessive Bollywood lovers. They are shown to mouth numerous film references and dance to popular songs in multiple scenes. Anushka is seen wearing two gorgeous chiffon sarees in the film, paying homage to late actor Sridevi's looks in her 1989 film, Chandni.
