Amitabh Bachchan to receive Dadasaheb Phalke award

Prakash Javadekar broke the news that veteran Bollywood actor and legend Amitabh Bachchan has been selected unanimously for Dadasaheb Phalke.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar, took to Twitter to break the news that veteran Bollywood actor and legend Amitabh Bachchan has been selected unanimously for the Dadasahab Phalke award.

A career-spanning close to five decades and it’s hard to imagine any role or character that Amitabh Bachchan has not portrayed. Be it the ‘Angry Young Man’ or those with grey shades, the veteran actor has showcased an array of emotions over the years.

Amitabh Bachchan began his film career in 1969 with the movie ‘Saat Hindustani’. In 1973, his film ‘Zanjeer’ was released. In this, he played a new kind of hero who fought the injustices in the system. With this movie, he earned the title of  the ‘Angry Young Man’

 He went on to score major hits with movies such as ‘Anand’ (1970) and ‘Namak Haram’ (1973). Amitabh Bachchan came on to the scene when there was a great deal of disaffection in the country, especially among the educated and unemployed. In the subsequent years, he went on to give several major hits including ‘Deewaar’ (1975), in which he played the role of a mafia don, besides ‘Trishul’ (1978), ‘Don’ (1978), ‘Natwarlal’ (1979), ‘Suhaag’ (1979), ‘The Great Gambler’ (1980), ‘Kaalia’ (1981), ‘Silsila’ (1981), ‘Shakti’ (1982). 

He won the National Award for his role in ‘Agneepath’ (1990). After suffering a slump in fortunes, he shot back into the limelight when he hosted the popular programme ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. He also acted in the Hollywood movie ‘The Great Gatsby’ (released in 2013). Amitabh Bachchan was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.

The legend is now set to receive India’s highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which he rightfully deserves for all the contributions he has made to Indian Cinema.
 
What is the Dadasaheb Phalke Award?

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India's highest award in cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient is honoured for their outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry.
