People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India is based in Mumbai and was launched in January 2000. The main objective of PETA is that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. The organisation also educates policymakers and the people about animal abuse and promotes an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. PETA India primarily focuses on areas in which the highest numbers of animals suffer the most: in laboratories, in the food industry, in leather trade, and in the entertainment business.
