Indian cinema is always known to influence people’s minds. The Indian filmmakers are focusing on making films which depict social issues, they are also paying attention to the differently-abled people of our society. Many Bollywood movies have had Bollywood actors playing the role of a differently-abled person which not only shows the sensitivity of the subject but also sets a different perception in one’s mind. Let’s have a look at such Bollywood movies.

Movies that depict physical disabilities/illnesses of characters

Margarita with a straw

Featuring Kalki Koechlin, Margarita With a Straw is directed by Shonali Bose. It also casts actors like Sayani Gupta, Revathi and William Moseley. The film is about a teenage girl Laila (Kalki Koechlin) who suffers from cerebral palsy and moves to a small town from New Delhi for higher education. She encounters a lot of things like a normal teenager. The film did not do well at the box office but Kalki Koechlin received praises for her character and the film also got a lot of positive reviews at international festivals.

Barfi

Barfi’, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’cruz was directed by Anurag Basu. The film shows two differently-abled people, Ranbir Kapoor played the role of a mute boy while Priyanka Chopra played the role of an autistic girl. The film had a touching story revolving around the life of all the three characters. The film was a hit and Priyanka Chopra especially was praised for her character Jhilmil.

Paa

R Balki’s Paa, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan focused on a rare genetic disorder known ad ‘progeria’ which leads to quicken the ageing process in children. Amitabh Bachchan played the role of a 12-year-old boy who looks five times older than his age. Amitabh Bachchan’s prosthetic makeup was one of the notable things in the movie.

Kaabil

Featuring the love story of two blind people, Kaabil is a revenge drama film starring Hrithik Roshan ad Yami Gautam. The film gives out a message which says that people who are visually impaired should be treated equally and their contribution to society should also be appreciated.

Zero

Anand L Rai’s recent film Zero stars Shah Rukh Khan who played depicted a dwarf in the film. The film also features two female leads, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. Dwarfism is also a genetic disorder which is generally neglected and the film threw some light on this issue.
