The year 2018 has been a strange one for Bollywood. The Hindi film industry has seen lots of ups and downs this year and shattering of many well-established norms. For one, it has definitely not been the year of the Khans so far. Salman Khan and Aamir Khan both had a disappointing 2018 as both their release failed to make an impact. With Shah Rukh Khan's 'Zero' being the last big release from the three Khans this year, let's take a look at how the year has been so far:

Race 3

The Remo D'Souza directorial was a big disaster from a critical point of view. Easily the worst of the three 'Race' movies, the Salman Khan starrer had faced plenty of ridicule even after the trailer came out. Memes and jokes abounded, particularly on Daisy Shah for her infamous line, "Our business is our business none of your business." Even the director after a few months admitted that the film was a misfire on their part. One could, of course, argue the film made somewhat profitable collections but considering the fact that it was mounted on Rs 185 crore and earned only Rs 212 crore gross in India, it is a pretty bad result for a superstar like Salman Khan.

Thugs of Hindostan

This one needs no introduction for the memory is still fresh in everyone's minds. Aamir Khan faced the biggest debacle in his career in over a decade. The Vijay Krishna Acharya directorial was unanimously bashed right from the first show and there was no respite for the makers from the social media users who trolled the film mercilessly. The criticism in reviews clearly reflected in box office figures for it earned only about Rs 138 crore in India. Considering the fact that it was mounted a really massive budget that was well over Rs 200 crore, this Amitabh and Aamir starrer has disaster written all over it. Although, the actor has since apologised for the movie which earned him a lot of respect.

Zero

This finally brings us to Shah Rukh Khan's 'Zero', the film on which Bollywood is riding its hopes on in 2018. Mounted on a grand budget of Rs 200 crore, the Aanand L Rai directorial is one of the biggest releases of the year and the buzz is massive. However, from the first reviews that have come out, there isn't much to be happy about. But there is some hope in the form of King Khan's fans who seemed to have enjoyed this fantasy romance film so the collections might be good. However, that is still a big if and if this flick also fails to shine, then it leads to the question of whether 2018 has become a bad year for the Khans.

It must also be noted that not all Hindi films have tanked at the box office. Movies with actors like Rajkummar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana have been passing the test of the audiences with flying colours with movies such as 'Stree', 'AndhaDhun' and 'Badhaai Ho'. The specialty of these films is that they are made on a much smaller budget but their profit margins have been phenomenal, with some movies running weeks after their release to packed houses. With this observation, it is also crystal clear that content is the new king in Bollywood and star power can guarantee a good opening but not good overall collections or accolades.
