How Kamal Haasan inspired Quentin Tarantino with one of his movies

Quentin Tarantino's prolific and intricate filmmaking has been an inspiration for many in the field of cinema. His ardent fans call his cult films as, 'Tarantion-verse' and often go gaga over his precision over the conflicted scenes as well as the convoluted storytelling. According to media reports, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor once ran after the filmmaker on the streets of New York to capture a selfie with him. But it is not a hidden fact that Tarantino also derives inspiration from several other films belonging to diverse languages. The filmmaker has always been vocal about getting inspired by other prominent movies when it came to his style of filmmaking.

Quentin Tarantino was inspired by the animated violence sequence from the film Aalavandhan

Reportedly, in an earlier interaction with Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Quentin had revealed that he was inspired by the Kamal Haasan starrer film Aalavandhan. The film had released in the year 2001. The megastar is celebrating his birthday today and this is indeed a special revelation about him. The director had sought inspiration from the film for an action sequence in his popular film, Kill Bill. Anurag went on to say that he had first heard this news from sight and sound critic, Naman Ramchandran. The Raman Raghav director then revealed that he had asked Quentin if this is true when they met in Venice.

Aalavandhan was also released in Hindi under the title of Abhay

It was then that Quentin said that the animated violence sequence was inspired by an Indian film that had showcased violence in an animated manner. Before Kill Bill, it is only the Kamal Haasan starrer Aalavandhan which had such a style of filmmaking. The film was directed by Suresh Krissna and was also released in Hindi under the title, 'Abhay.' The actor also revealed about the animated sequence in an earlier interview. He said that when he performed the sequence, 12 years ago, it came across as self-indulgent and odd to several people. He further added that the sequence is now being appreciated by the viewers and the critics.
