Kamal Haasan is one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema. The Indian 2 actor has had an illustrious career spanning 59 years. Over the course of his six-decade career, Kama Haasan had featured in over 130 films in various languages. Besides acting, the veteran actor has also dabbled in production, writing and directing. Kamal Haasan has proven to be an extremely versatile and risk-taking actor, having done out-of-the box films such as Abhay, Anbe Sivam, Dasavathaaram amongst many others.

1. Nayagan (1987)

Directed by Mani Ratnam, this film is considered as one of Kamal Hassan's finest performances. The actor won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance which was loosely based on the real-life Bombay-underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar. In 2005, TIME magazine included the film in its "All-Time 100 Best Films" list. 

2. Indian (1996)

Shankar's 1996 film featured the veteran actor in the double role of father and son. The film focuses on an ex-freedom fighter-turned-vigilante bent on rooting out corruption, and his son, who is at the other end of the spectrum by facilitating corrupt practices, leading to some unfortunate events. Kamal Haasan won his third National Film Award for Best Actor for this film. Currently, the actor is shooting the sequel, Indian 2, which will reportedly be his last film as an actor.

3. Thevar Magan (1992)

The 1992 film Thevar Magan was written by Kamal Haasan. The film saw the coming together of Kamal and the stalwart of Tamil cinema, Sivaji Ganesan. Thevar Magan narrated the ideological differences between the urban son and his rural landlord father. In 1997, the film was remade as Virasat, filmed by Priyadarshan and also starring Anil Kapoor, Tabu and Amrish Puri in the lead roles.

4. Anbe Sivam (2003)

Another film that was written by the actor, Anbe Sivam, released in the year 2003. It featured Kamal Haasan and R.Madhavan in the lead roles and narrated the story of an unexpected journey from Bhubaneswar to Chennai undertaken by the two men of contrasting personalities. The film focuses on the themes of communism, altruism, and atheism, and also focused on Kamal's views as a humanist. Upon release, the film was unsuccessful at the box-office, but has since acquired cult status amongst filmgoers.
