Megastar Kamal Haasan is celebrating his birthday today. The actor is undoubtedly one of the finest performers of the industry and has given a glorious contribution to Indian cinema. He started his film career at the mere age of five. His first film fetched him the prestigious President's Gold Medal. Since then, there was no looking back for the actor. He recently completed 59 years at the Indian film industry. The actor is known for his versatile performances in films like Chachi 420, Indian 2, Ulaganayagan and Ek Duje Ke Liye. The actor's real name is Parthasarathy Srinivasan

For those who are unaware, Kamal was actually named Parthasarathy Srinivasan. He was born in Paramakudi in a middle-class family. He is also a self-declared rationalist. His mother was a homemaker while his father was a lawyer. 

He is the recipient of the highest number of Filmfare Awards

The Chachi 420 actor has the highest number of Filmfare Awards to his kitty. He has won about 19 Filmfare awards in languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Reportedly in the year 2000, he also wrote a letter to Filmfare requesting them not to nominate him further and encourage the new talents of the industry. He won both the, 'Best actor' and 'Best supporting actor' for the film Saagar.

He joined politics at the age of 62

It is not a hidden fact that the link between cinema and politics in the state of Tamil Nadu is extremely close-knitted. The legendary actor is not the one to mince his words when it comes to issues like freedom of speech or artistic autonomy. Hence, it was no surprise when the actor chose to join politics at the age of 62 and started his own political party, 'Makkal Needhi Maiam.' The actor reportedly also disowned his fan clubs and transformed them into a social welfare organisation. The organisation was named as Narpani Iyakkam.
