Bollywood has seen the breakup of many "it-couples", be it Salman-Aishwarya, John-Bipasha or Ranbir-Katrina. One such was Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. The two were in a serious relationship and had done quite several films together, Milenge Milenge, 36 China Town, Chup Chup Ke and Jab We Met. But the two called it quits in 2006 ending a fairy-tale love story.
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor dated for almost five years and were very vocal about their relationship. In an interview with a daily portal, Shahid revealed that he was going through a breakup with someone outside the industry and Kareena supported him during this time. It was Kareena who had asked Shahid out. The two actors had even appeared on Karan Johar’s popular talk show, Koffee with Karan.
According to reports, Kareena Kapoor’s mother, Babita Kapoor and sister Karisma Kapoor were allegedly against her relationship with Shahid Kapoor. Although Shahid belonged to a family with a film background, his father being the legendary Pankaj Kapoor, it was reported that Babita did feel favourably towards the couple’s match. Babita and Karisma allegedly kept on advising Kareena against the relationship. Kareena Kapoor used to reportedly ask producers to cast Shahid Kapoor opposite her in movies. According to sources, Babita Kapoor thought her daughter’s obsession to be quite unprofessional.
After Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor’s film Fida, there were reports of a problem between the two actors. They also began to work on different films which further widened the gap between them. Kareena was shooting for Tashan, around the time Jab We Met was set to release. Kareena met Saif Ali Khan on the sets of Tashan, and the two allegedly started getting close. Shahid too was linked with Vidya Balan with whom he was working in Kismat Konnection.
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor’s breakup happened while shooting for Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met. But they confirmed it only after the film’s release. According to reports, they were very professional on the sets and did not let their problems hamper the shooting in any way. However, people felt an air of discomfort around the two actors on the sets.
Shahid Kapoor had later stated that his breakup with Kareena Kapoor was quite a public affair which hampered his daily life. He also reportedly said that if the script demands it and the director feels that Kareena will be the best choice for the film, then he had no problem in working with her again. After this statement, they went on to star together in Udta Punjab. But the two actors did not share screen space at all. Although it has been years since Shahid and Kareena broke up, their fans are still eager to see them pair up on screen.
