He started his career as a director in the year 1983 with the film Pallavi Anu Pallavi. He was also honoured with Padma Shri by the Government of India for his contribution to Indian Cinema. 1. Roja

Roja is a 1992 romantic thriller written and directed by Mani Ratnam. The film won the Best Film on National Integration award. It is considered to be a classic. It is the first film of Mani Ratnam’s trilogy which depicts human relationships and terrorism. It received critical acclaim.

2. Dil Se

The film was the first project of Mani Ratnam and Shah Rukh Khan. It depicts seven stages of love in the song Satrangi Re and as well as the movie, which was attraction, infatuation, love, reverence, worship, obsession, and death. It is considered as a masterpiece of the director. The dialogues and music of the film were received very well by the audiences. A.R. Rahman was appreciated for the music of the film.

3. Iruvar

Iruvar is a 1997 Tamil language political drama. The film is loosely based on the relationship between cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu. It was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Aishwarya Rai made her screen debut with this film.

5. OK Kanmani

The film is a romantic drama released in 2015. It is the new-age story of a young couple living an urban life. The film stars Dulquer Salman and Nithiya Menon. It was later also remade in Hindi as OK Jaanu. The film opened up to a good word of mouth by the audiences and critics.
