Nawazuddin Siddiqui says 'Content driven films are propaganda films, not cinema'

In a recent interview, Nawazuddin Siddiqui spoke about why he felt like current content-driven films are not really cinema and are more like propaganda.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui's latest film, Motichoor Chaknachoor, was recently released in theatres across the country on November 15. In an interview, the actor spoke about his views on content-driven social films. While Nawazuddin himself is known for his roles in content-driven movies, he does not believe that such movies are actually cinema and finds them to be more akin to propaganda.

In a recent interview with a entertainment website, Nawazuddin revealed his thoughts on the recent trend of content-driven films that deal with social issues. According to him, such films are like propaganda, where you pick up a social issue and make it look like a national crisis. He says that while these films tackle important issues they still have the same usual tropes and will have the five songs and an item dance number just like a normal Bollywood Masala film. So for these reasons he does not really believe in calling such films content-driven.

He, however, clarified that he was not against signing up for such a film. According to him, that is what is currently working in the Indian market and he himself has started to do the same thing. Many of Nawazuddin Siddiqui's films are known to be content-driven and tackle harsh subjects or social issues. However, he still adds five songs into his films and calls them content driven as a selling point.

He also said that he believes that actors should have a commercial standing to be successful, as only then will a film be made and the actor's name can be used to sell the film. He said that the reason that he is doing so many commercial films today is that he has a market value. Nawazuddin also added that the distributors know about an actors value and they also know why a film flops or becomes a hit. 

When asked if he thought independent films are not commercially viable, Nawazuddin said that such a perception needs to change. He said that small films do not flop nowadays due to digital mediums. However, he added that disaster occurs when big-budget films flop. But even then, those films also manage to recover their money after the theatrical release is over and their failure does not really affect the big-name actors.
