#MeToo | From Tanushree Dutta's Controversy To Allegations On Sajid Khan, Netizens are questioning Shah Rukh Khan's Deafening Silence

In the wake of the 'Me Too' movement that had earlier taken Hollywood by storm, former actress Tanushree Dutta accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment. Tanushree's fight for justice has now taken a legal turn. Meanwhile, Dutta's brave step has now pushed several victims to share their stories. 

But there are also many others who have maintained a deafening silence over the matter, which one can say is quite tragic. Many Bollywood big-wigs such as Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have steered clear from addressing the issue, merely claiming that they were not present at the time of the incident, and so it would not be right for them to comment on the matter. However, this is not the first time a few selective celebrities from the Indian film industry, have maintained silence about social issues.

From the Tanushree Dutta controversy to allegations of sexual harassment on director Sajid Khan, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan has maintained a stoic silence over the issue, and has gone ahead with his film promotions and shooting without giving the topic much importance. Although he is known as one of the most eminent personalities of the industry, he has always steered clear of commenting on social issues. 

Earlier a Delhi-based aspiring actor, a rape survivor, had spoken out for the first time about the ordeal she faced, exposing the rot, running deep, in the industry. The survivor recounted the horror for the first time on television and exposed top Bollywood producer and a close friend of Shah Rukh Khan, Karim Morani. Morani, who is known for backing films like 'Chennai Express' and 'Ra.One'is facing rape change and is currently out on bail.

Speaking to Republic TV, she recounted the incidents of that day and stated that Morani forced her to drink and violated her afterwards. “Morani came home around 7pm with a bottle of wine. I didn't drink but he forced me to drink. Next thing I know, I wake up at 4am. I was numb and shocked. Physically and mentally, I was in a state of shock. Karim was not there. I saw there were marks on my body when I woke up,” recounted the survivor. 

Talking further about Karim Morani's close association with Shah Rukh Khan, the survivor said, “I do not know how Shah Rukh Khan can work with him. I do not to intend to drag him in. But how can anyone work with someone who has underworld links and is connected to the 2G scam.” But even after Karim Morani's story broke out, Shah Rukh Khan has maintained his silence and has not spoken up about the matter.

With the #MeToo movement gaining momentum one can say that there is quite a bit of noise surrounding the incident, but beyond that, there is a deafening silence. One can also say that the industry has quite often decided to voice their opinion only on certain matters thus terming it as 'selective outrage' and also hypocrisy. 

Apart from the Bollywood bigwigs, renowned writer Chetan Bhagat has been accused of sexual misconduct by an anonymous victim after she shared screenshots of her chat with the author. While Alok Nath has been accused of rape by popular 90's show 'Tara' producer Vinta Nanda. In a detailed post on Facebook, she also mentioned that Alok Nath was an alcoholic, and accused him of allegedly being inappropriate with the lead actress of the show, Navneet Nishan. 

Several known names from the entertainment industry have been named and shamed. The movement which started on social media has left no stone unturned in outing all those who have harassed others. Several Bollywood celebrities have spoken out in support of the victims of sexual misconduct. From Priyanka Chopra, Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Twinkle Khanna, Sonam Kapoor, Swara  Bhasker, Sophie Choudry, to Farhan Akhtar, all have been supportive and raised their voice against the issue.

So only time will tell when the main-stream actors like Shah Rukh Khan will break their silence?
