Late Om Prakash Puri is counted as one of those actors of the industry who impressed audiences with his impressive and amazing performances. Om Puri was born on October 18, 1950, in Ambala in a Punjabi family. Even though his first film was a children movie titled Chor Chor Chhup Ja. His mainstream debut was with the Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal in 1976. The veteran actor is known for his acting skills and on the day of his 68th birthday, let us take a look back at how he made a mark in the industry.

A look back to Om Puri’s journey in Bollywood industry

Om Puri was one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema to work in Hollywood films and series. He studied acting at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. His classmates include one of the finest actors in the industry, Naseeruddin Shah, who is known for his non-commercial films. Om Puri was an essential part of the Indian Cinema in the 80s along with actors like Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi.

Om Puri won the National Film Award for the film Ardh Satya in 1983. The story revolves around the tale of a policeman (Om Puri), who is struggling with the crime around him. The film also features Amrish Puri, Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah. The movie was the sequel of 1980 release Aakrosh. Mr. Puri starred in the Indie UK hit East is East in the year 1999, based on Ayub Khan’s play and directed by Damien O'Donnell. It is a dark comedy about a Pakistani man, George Khan and his family struggling to get along in Manchester.

He was also known internationally for his roles in Gandhi, My Son the Fanatic, City of Joy, and The Hundred-Foot Journey. His recent Hindi hits include Gulzar’s Maachis, which is about the rise of militancy in Punjab. In the year 2013, he had a divorce with wife Nandita Puri and has a son named Ishaan with her. Om Puri was honoured with Order of the British Empire (Honorary) in 2004. In 1998 he also won Crystal Star Best Actor at the Brussels International Film Festival for My Son the Fanatic. Mr. Puri suffered a massive heart attack on January 6, 2017, and passed away at his Andheri residence in Mumbai.
