India has had a contentious relationship with the Academy Awards. Many Indian films have been sent to the Oscars, as India’s official entries, reportedly being 45, but only a few of them actually made it to the final list of nominations. As per reports of 2019, only four Indian films have been nominated for the Oscars award. Here is a list of Indian Oscars movies that is a must-watch.

1. Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India (2001)

In 2002, Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India was nominated to the Oscars list. Ashutosh Gowariker’s directorial starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh was reportedly a big success at the box office. The story of the film is about the resilience shown by the Indian farmers when they were under the pressure of British Rule. Even today, Aamir Khan's film is frequently aired on television. The film highlights the capability of Indian farmers and how they win the most difficult game against the British.

2. Salaam Bombay! (1988)

Salaam Bombay! chronicles the story about the plight of Bombay's poor street children, who call the gutters of its filthy urban streets as home. It is filled with the sights and sounds of this urban nightmare. Helmed by Mira Nair, Salaam Bombay! made it to the final nominations at the 61st Oscar Awards in 1989. This is a must-watch story for today's generation who fail to understand the plight of poor people.

3. Life of Pi (2012)

Directed by Ang Lee, Life of Pi was nominated for Oscars in 2013. The film is about the story of a young man who survives a disaster at sea who then begins an epic journey of adventure and discovery. Far away from the real world, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor- a fearsome Bengal tiger.

4. Gully Boy (2019)

Director Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles has been selected as India's official entry to Oscars. The film chronicles a story on the lives of street rappers in Mumbai. Murad, essayed by Ranveer Singh, is the son of a driver, his parents worked hard to get him educated so that he could have a white-collar job. But he realizes that he is passionate to become a rapper.
