Rakul Preet Singh: All you need to know about her stint in the south

Rakul Preet is one of the new faces in Bollywood that are making a name for themselves. However, she is already a popular actor in the southern film industry.

Rakul Preet Singh is set to feature in the upcoming Bollywood film Marjaavaan. While Rakul Preet might be a new star for fans of Hindi cinema, she is actually quite an experienced actor. She is highly popular in the South Indian Film Industry and has starred in several Tamil and Telugu movies. Her debut film was in 2009, and since, then she has worked to make herself a well-known celebrity in multiple South Indian film industries.

Her family and education

Rakul Preet Singh was born on October 10, 1990, and she is currently 28 years old as of today. She shared a few details about her family in an interview. Rakul was born in New Delhi to a Punjabi military family. After finishing her schooling in the Army Public School, she went on to complete her Honours in Mathematics through Jesus and Mary College of the University of Delhi. Rakul also said that she had always wanted to be an actor and even started her career as a model at the age of 18 while she was still in college.

Rakul Preet’s first film debut was in the 2009 movie Gilli, which was a Kannada language movie. She has said that she took the role for the money and was not really aware of how huge the South Indian film industry actually was. After Gilli, she took a break from movies to finish her education as well as the focus on modelling. She participated in the 2011 Femina Miss India pageant, where she won four subtitles.

Rakul then returned to the film industry in 2011 to feature in the Telugu film Keratam. While she was praised for her role, she also received very little screen time to shine. Her next few films were all Tamil or Telugu. All her films performed decently at the box office, and her acting was critically acclaimed in each role she played.

Her rise to fame in the South Indian Film Industry

While Rakul Preet Singh featured in several films, none were big enough to make her a superstar in the south. However, by 2015, she was simultaneously signed up for four big-budget Telugu films. One of those films was 2016’s Telugu-language movie Nannaku Prematho, where Rakul dubbed herself for the first time in her career. She received high praise for her acting in the film as well as for her beauty and even won the Best Actress Award for her role at the Jio SIIMA 2017.

After this, Rakul became a popular big-name actor in the South Indian industry, which earned her several other roles in Tamil and Telugu films. She also became a renowned celebrity with a sizable fan following in the south. She also happens to be one of the most expensive female actors in the southern film industry. In 2017’s Telugu film Jaya Janaki Nayaka, she charged around INR 1.5 crore for playing her role.

Rakul’s next Tamil film will be Indian 2, directed by S. Shankar, set to release in 2020. Her debut in Bollywood and Hindi cinema was 2014’s coming of age romance Yaariyan. Rakul Preet Singh seems to be trying to gain a foothold in the Hindi film industry at the moment. She is not only appearing in Marjaavaan but also played a lead role in De De Pyaar De where she co-starred alongside popular Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn.
