Sanjay Dutt: Awards and accolades that the Khalnayak actor received

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is the son of renowned actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis. Born in 1959, Sanjay kick-started his acting journey with Rocky in 1981. The romantic action drama was directed by his father Sunil himself. Rocky released a few days after his mother Nargis’s death and was one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Sanjay Dutt earned recognition with Naam. Released in 1985, the crime thriller movie was a turning point in the actor’s Bollywood career.

Sanjay Dutt received various award nominations early on

Naam was followed by several commercially hit movies including Jeete Hain Shaan Se and Mardon Wali Baat in 1988, Ilaaka, Hum Bhi Insaan Hain and Kanoon Apna Apna, which were released in 1989. The Vaastav actor earned numerous nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Lawerence D’Souza’s romantic drama film Saajan. The actor starred alongside Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Kader Khan, Reema Lagoo, and Laxmikant Berde in pivotal roles.

Released in 1991, Saajan was one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of that time and was proved to be a blockbuster hit. Sanjay Dutt also received acclaim for his role in Subhash Ghai’s Khalnayak. Dutt portrayed an antagonist in the action thriller movie which released in 1993. The film revolving around capturing a terrorist, Khalnayak starred Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in the lead roles. According to the Box Office India, the film was the second highest-grossing movie of 1993. This movie is famous for its memorable music including the Alka Yagnik’s song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai.

Awards and Accolades

Sanjay Dutt won his first Best Actor award at a ceremony for his portrayal of a common man who turned gangster in Mahesh Manjrekar’s 1999 film Vaastav: The Reality. The Khalnayak actor also earned awards for playing a dedicated army officer in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 2001 movie Mission Kashmir. The action drama starred an ensemble cast of Preity Zinta, Hrithik Roshan, Jackie Shroff and Sonali Kulkarni. Later on, Dutt went on to receive accolades for playing a gangster in comedy-drama series Munna Bhai M.B.B.S and its sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

Sanjay Dutt's biopic

After his arrest for illegal possessions of weapons, the actor served his sentence with conduct and was released in 2016. But a biopic based on his life was theatrically released in 2018. Rajkumar Hirani’s directorial film Sanju starred Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt. Dutt made a special appearance in a song of this film. This biopic garnered critical acclamation and emerged as one of the highest grosser of that year.
