Vishal Bhardwaj To Adapt Yet Another Popular Novel For The Screen

Filmmaker and music composer Vishal Bhardwaj who is known for his unconventional films is reportedly planning to adapt Salman Rushdie's book for the screen

Filmmaker and music composer Vishal Bhardwaj who is known for making unconventional films is reportedly planning on adapting yet another famous novel for the screen. Reportedly, the director is planning to get on to the digital space with Salman Rushdie's novel 'Midnight's Children'. It is reported that the director is planning to collaborate with Netflix for the project. 

The digital platform is gaining increased importance, with several directors moving towards this platform to experiment with content. Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap were among the first Bollywood directors to make a Netflix original series, 'Sacred Games'. The series, which is the adaptation of the book by the same name written by Vikram Chandra became a hit and people are eagerly awaiting the season 2 of the series.

'Midnight's Children' is a 1981 novel by British Indian author Salman Rushdie. It deals with India's transition from British colonialism to independence and the partition of British India. It is considered an example of postcolonial, postmodern, and magical realist literature. The book won both the Booker Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1981.  It was awarded the "Booker of Bookers" Prize and the best all-time prize winners in 1993 and 2008 to celebrate the Booker Prize 25th and 40th anniversary.

Vishal Bhardwaj has previously directed several other films, which are an adaptation of classic work of literature. Some of these films include 'Maqbool' (Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'), 'Omkara'( Shakespeare’s 'Othello'), 'Haider'(adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy 'Hamlet'),  '7 Khoon Maaf' (an adaptation of the short story Susanna's Seven Husbands by Ruskin Bond), among others. His latest film, 'Pataakha' which released on September 28, is based on Chetan Singh Pathik's short story 'Do Behnein'. The film is about two sisters who are constantly at war and is a metaphor for the war between India-Pakistan. The movie has been garnering positive reviews.
