Matthew McConaughey celebrates his 50th birthday today on November 4. The Interstellar actor has come a long way since his breakout role in Dazed & Confused. Matthew is now not only an Academy Award-winning actor but also is a philanthropist that works for the youth of his country. So to celebrate his 50th birthday, here are some of his top movie roles that you should add to your watch list.

1.  Mud

Mud is considered to be one of the best performances of Matthew McConaughey to date. The actor played the role of a murderer named Mud who is on the run in this movie directed by Jeff Nichols. This 2012 American coming-of-age drama film showed the versatility of Mud’s character who, apart from dealing with his own problems, is also a great friend to the two boys who help him reunite with his lover Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). Matthew McConaughey’s film Mud was not only well received at the box-office but also received critical acclaim.

2. Dallas Buyers Club

Dallas Buyers Club is considered as a symbol of Matthew McConaughey’s dedication towards his craft. Matthew lost approximately 38 pounds of weight to play the role of Ron Woodroof. The actor’s portrayal of an AIDS patient who starts a club to sell illegal drugs to prolong the life of AIDS patients won him an Academy Award in 2013.

3.  A Time to Kill

Matthew McConaughey played the role of a lawyer in this 1996 film, which is based on John Grisham’s novel of the same name. Matthew portrayed the role of Jake Brigance, a lawyer who is set to defend a father who murders his daughter’s rapists. Jake’s role as a lawyer, who is stuck between emotions and law, was successfully brought to life by McConaughey. A Time to Kill was not only a commercial success but was also critically acclaimed.

4. Dazed & Confused

Dazed & Confused is considered to be the breakout role of Matthew McConaughey. In this American coming of age comedy film Matthew played the role of David Wooderson. Although the film did not work well at the box-office, it considered to be one of the best high school movies of the era.
