DCU’s Blue Beetle was released on August 18 and is currently enjoying a positive response on social media. Blue Beetle is the first-ever live-action introduction of the 1939 DC comic book character. Here’s how the film sets up a sequel for this technology-driven hero.

3 things you need to know:

  • Blue Beetle is the first DCU movie to release after The Flash.
  • The Flash, even though it was a box office flop, rebooted the DCU.
  • Blue Beetle features two post-credits scenes which set up the possibility of a sequel.

How Blue Beetle sets up a sequel?

Blue Beetle opens with an opening credits scene which sets up the entire movie in advance. It explains the alien origins of the Scarab, and how it crash-landed on Earth. It also shows how Ted Kord was the first Blue Beetle and used technology derived from the Scarab to be a superhero based in Palmera City, Texas. However, his wife, Victoria Kord, took the throne of Kord Industries to develop imitative armour technology for cybernetic soldiers.

Then we see Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) take on the mantle of the futuristic armoured superhero as the plot progresses. After the credits roll, the first post-credits scene features a message from the original Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) who is alive and has found a way to communicate after the Blue Beetle ship was activated. This directly sets up Blue Beetle 2, as it will be about finding the original wielder of the Blue Beetle suit.

Booster Gold to join DCEU?

Blue Beetle wastes no time in mentioning both iterations of the Blue Beetle. Ted Kord and Booster Gold (Michael John Carter) have both been members of the Justice League and best friends. It should be noted that Booster Gold is a superhero that has no powers but instead has travelled 400 years into the past in order to do good for society with his advanced technology.

As Ted Kord gets discovered, it is likely that Booster Gold may be hinted at, or might even appear in the film. That will directly pave the way for the Booster Gold series that has been promised by James Gunn and Peter Safran as part of the first DCU chapter – Gods and Monsters

Moreover, with Superman: Legacy, slated for July 2025, both Blue Beetle and Booster Gold may feature in the latest iteration of the cinematic Justice League. It is likely that the Booster Gold live-action series may premiere before Superman: Legacy. It has already been revealed by James Gunn that Blue Beetle as a character has a lot of importance in the DCU, which means that he might be the connective tissue in the whole series.
