The Spin-off to Game of Thrones series, House of Dragons has received a 10-episode, straight-to-series order on Tuesday afternoon, on October 29. The news of the House of Dragons spin-off came just hours after news broke that HBO announced the cancellation of a previous highly-anticipated Game of Thrones spin-off series starring Naomi Watts.

Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones

“The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is so rich with stories,” Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming, said in a statement. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan, and George,” he added. The show is set 300 years before the events of "Game of Thrones" and tells the story of the beginnings and the end of the House of Targaryen. HBO has taken to Twitter to make the announcement by retweeting the tweet of Game of Thrones' official Twitter Handle.

Emmy Winner Sapochnik returns to direct the spin-off

Emmy-winning 'Game of Thrones' director Miguel Sapochnik will return to direct the pilot as well as additional episodes that will be co-created by George RR Martin and Ryan Condal. The three will serve as executive producers alongside Vince Gerardis. The project will mark HBO's first official follow-up to "Game of Thrones," which won best drama series at the Emmys back in September.

'House of the Dragon' is indeed focused on the formation of House Targaryen, a family line that eventually produced the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, however, it is highly unlikely that Clarke will be appearing on the show as the prequel series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
