Siddique, a veteran of Malayalam cinema, having worked in over 300 films, including occasional some in Tamil and Telugu, made the controversial remark in an interview with a Malayalam portal.

The actor was talking about the importance of superstars in every film industry, like Mohanlal and Mammootty, who recently delivered successful films like ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Madhura Raja’ respectively, for Malayalam cinema. He claimed that the entire industry survives on such stars, including ‘character actors’ like himself.

Siddique further added that the Malayalam industry was ‘lucky’ to have the two Ms—Mammootty and Mohanlal, who were both ‘superstars and impeccable actors.’

However, in comparison, the actor felt that was not the case in the Tamil industry. He then said that actors like Vijay might be a superstar, but not a ‘super actor’ and added that his stardom took him this far in the industry.

However, Siddique mentioned Kamal Haasan in the same breath as the two Ms, as someone both a good actor and superstar.

Vijay fans were clearly not happy and called him a ‘random comedian’. Some wondered why those close to Mohanlal were running Vijay down while some got angry over Ajith fans expressing delight over Siddique’s comment.

Not just that, Vijay’s 'Mersal' co-star Hareesh Peradi also came out in his support, calling Vijay a good actor, superstar, and a good human being.
