'Nerkonda Paarvai': Ajith-starrer's misogynist review draws flak, Siddharth, Chinmayi Sripaada lash out

Ahead of its release, Ajith’s 'Nerkonda Paarvai' is the news for the wrong reasons. No, nothing is wrong with its content, but a misogynist review of the Tamil movie has sparked widespread outrage on social media, including from celebrities. Three male ‘critics’ from the YouTube channel Valai Pechu seemed to suggest that the female protagonists ‘asked for it’ as crimes are committed against them.

'Nerkonda Paarvai' is the official remake of the National Award-winning ‘Pink’, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti  Kulhari and Andrea Tariang. The movie deals with sexual crimes against women, victim shaming and the importance of consent. 

As per reports and netizens’ comments, the three men from Valai Pechu said that they couldn’t sympathise with the female characters when crime happens against them because they are upper-class women who visit pubs and have sexual relations. They, in fact, said that even the audiences don’t feel anything for the protagonists. 

They even claimed that the pub culture and having sexual relations with boys were more common in the North, that’s why a film like ‘Pink’ worked and the characters didn’t come across as unpleasant then. Comparing it to ‘Tamil culture’, they said that the characters weren’t relatable.

Sharing the video, Singer Chinmayi Sripaada wrote, “The everyday misogyny and justification of ‘They asked for it’ by 3 mainstream Tamil reviewers.”

‘Rang De Basanti’ actor Siddharth didn’t mince his words and termed them as ‘desperate, shameless, uneducated’ and demanded that they be stripped of their power. “#Valaipechu has always been desperate,shameless, uneducated and repulsive yellow journalism. To expect standards from people like them is a waste of time. Strip them of their power. Stop calling them journalists. Real journalists must come together and save their industry first,” he tweeted. 

Apparently, it is not the first time that the channel has reviewed films in such a manner. Nevertheless, the channel has reportedly apologised and pulled down the video. 

Meanwhile, 'Nerkonda Paarvai' releases on August 8. The movie also stars Shraddha Srinath, Abirami Venkatachalam and Andrea Tariang, apart from a  cameo from Vidya Balan. The Ajith-starrer has been directed by H Vinoth.
