Sexual Assault Case: AMMA to take action against actor Vijay Babu as per court verdict

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) on Sunday stated that any action against actor-producer Vijay Babu would be taken “as per the court's judgment”.

The Kerala High Court had earlier granted him anticipatory bail in the case. Actor Vijay Babu has been accused of rape disclosing the identity of the complainant through social media. However, he is now out on bail. 

Following all the accusations, actor Vijay Babu stepped down from the executive committee of the AMMA in May. 

Recently, AMMA president Mohanlal, its general secretary Edavela Babu, and its treasurer Siddique addressed a press conference. 

While speaking at the press conference, the General Secretary of AMMA Edavela Babu said, “This is a matter of the court to consider. Action will be taken if necessary as per the judgment of the court. We are waiting for the verdict of the court to come. Everyone is waiting for the verdict. He is a member of eight or nine clubs in Kochi. He has not yet been expelled from those clubs. AMMA is actually a club. AMMA will act in accordance with the court order.”

Meanwhile, Siddique said that the executive committee of AMMA has decided not to take up any action against Vijay until the court comes with a verdict. 

AMMA treasurer Siddique said, “We should not jump in and take any action while the proceedings are in court. He has not been proven guilty or non-guilty in court. He is out on bail. Let the court decide. The executive committee of AMMA has decided not to take any action against him until the court decides. He has decided to step down from the executive committee. Then how can we say that you should go away? He had made it clear that he would stay away from the official position of the organization until a decision was made on this, and then he did it. We are not providing him any protection.”

Two cases have been registered against the actor Vijay Babu

However, the court had directed actor Vijay Babu to cooperate with the investigation and has asked the actor to refrain from tampering with the probe. The court has also ordered him to not interact through or with social or other media. 

There are two cases registered against him. One is the sexual assault case and the other one is for disclosing the identity of the complainant through social media.

The complainant alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by Vijay Babu in a flat in Kochi. The offence was repeated by the accused more than once, she said in the complaint. The complaint said Babu committed the offence on the pretext of offering roles in movies to the woman.

The actor said that he will stay away from the Executive Committee of the organization till he is proven innocent in the sexual assault case to save the association from ‘disgrace’.
