On September 22, 1994, the iconic show Friends made its debut on NBC, the American TV network. The show was on the air from 1994 to 2004 and ran for 10 seasons with over 236 episodes. Friends reportedly developed one of the largest fan bases for a TV show, with millions of viewers worldwide tuning in every Thursday to watch the misadventures of six young adults in New York City. Fans swear by the numerous iconic moments and goals set by the friendships and relationships between the gang of six, Chandler, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, and Monica.

  1. Friends ran on the air for 10 seasons 

  2. Friends was originally called Insomnia Cafe. Other working names included Friends Like Us and Six Of One.

  3. The role of Ross was written specifically for David Schwimmer. The writers knew David personally and were keen to add him to the show.

  4. The opening credit sequence was shot in Los Angeles, not in New York City. It was shot at the Warner Bros' studio. 

  5. Lisa Kudrow never knew how to play the guitar. Yet, her character, Phoebe Buffay, would play the guitar in various episodes. 

  6. The show debuted on September 22, 1994

  7. Initially, the cast thought that Chandler was gay. This was written into the show and served as the basis of many humorous moments in the show. 

  8. The gang of six began earning $1 million per episode for seasons nine and ten. From syndication, the cast earns $20 million every year. 

  9. Lisa Kudrow's pregnancy was written into the show, but Courteney Cox's was not. This was because Cox suffered a miscarriage during filming. 

  10. For the opening credits of the Season 6 opener, The One After Vegas, the cast was given the last name "Arquette." This was done because Courteney Cox had gotten married to her then-husband, David Arquette.
