Billie Eilish receives backlash for saying 'men are never subjected to body-shaming'

Pop star Billie Eilish has received a lot of criticism for her recent comments on body shaming and how it differs between men and women. The pop singer had opened up about the subject in an exclusive interview with Variety.

Nobody says a thing about men's bodies: Eilish

In the said interview, Eilish was quoted saying, “Nobody ever says a thing about men’s bodies. If you’re muscular, cool. If you’re not, cool. If you’re rail thin, cool. If you have a dad bod, cool. If you’re pudgy, love it! Everybody’s happy with it.” The singer also stated that men are never put under much scrutiny for their bodies, no matter what the body type, "Because girls are nice. They don’t give a fu** because we see people for who they are!”

With the said interview now reaching more readers, and the quote about body-shaming going viral, many netizens took to the comments section of Variety to express their criticism of Eilish’s opinion. Many social media users even call the singer ‘tone-deaf’ for her allegedly narrow view of a subject like body-shaming.

A well-meaning fan wrote in the comments section, “Love u Billie but this just isn’t true I’ve seen girls mock guys' bodies and obese people all the time c'mon now just blanket statement of ‘girls don’t do that bc they are nice’ is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard her say lol girls can be just as mean as guys, especially to one another.” Another internet user posted, “This generation’s obsession with not only being a victim but making sure no one else is more of a victim than them is unprecedented. How tone-deaf can someone be?”

In the same interview, Eilish also opened up about her personal experiences of being sexualised from an early age. She had said, “I’ve had big boo** since I was nine years old, and that’s just the way I am. You wear something that’s at all revealing, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh, but you didn’t want people to sexualise you?”, recalling the phase of receiving strong media reactions when she wore a tank top in public once at the age of 16. 

On a professional front, Billie Eilish recently made headlines for bagging 3 nominations at this year's Grammys. Eilish received the said nominations for her song What Was I Made For from the Barbie soundtrack.
