Emergency Release Delay: The Kangana Ranaut starrer was scheduled to hit the big screens on September 6. However, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld the release amid demands of banning the movie. This prompted the makers to move to the High Court requesting a redirection in the CBFC's decision. Days after the legal tussle, the censor board has finally cleared the movie for release, as per reports. The new release date of the Kangana Ranaut starrer and directorial remains uncertain.

Emergency green lit for release by CBFC

As per several media reports, the Kangana Ranaut movie Emergency has been granted the U/A certificate by the CBFC. However, the censor board has proposed some scene cuts, modifications and disclaimers to be added to the movie in its theatrical run. It has been learnt that the same has been agreed upon by the producers.

Among the modifications, CBFC has reportedly, asked the filmmakers to provide ‘factual information’ about a quote attributed to US President Richard Nixon talking about Indian women and another by Winston Churchill saying Indians “breed like rabbits”. Additionally, the board has cut a scene depicting Pakistani soldiers attacking Bangladeshi refugees particularly one where a soldier can be seen smashing an infant's head. It is also being reported that the board has requested the makers to omit a surname or family name in the movie. Media reports claim that, the CBFC has also requested factual sources for all research references and statistical data cited in the film, including information on Bangladeshi refugees, details of court judgments, and permissions for the use of archival footage of Operation Bluestar.

When Kangana Ranaut reacted to Emergency delay

Taking to her X (formerly Twitter) handle on September 6, Kangana shared that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is yet to issue them a certificate owing to which they had to postpone the release date. She confirmed the delay in the film's release by writing, “With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial Emergency has been postponed, we are still waiting for the certification from the censor board, the new release date will be announced soon, thanks for your understanding and patience."

Emergency ran into legal trouble when apex Sikh religious bodies demanded a ban on the movie asserting that it would disturb communal harmony and show Sikhs in a negative light. The film is based on the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and was to feature the Punjab Riot, Gandhi's assassination, separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Operation Bluestar. The new release date of the movie is now awaited.
