John Abraham is set to bring in The Diplomat what he loves off-screen. "I love geopolitics. I'm very interested in it. I'm following what's happening with Mr Trump and Zelenskyy," the actor, 52, told Republic Media Network's Editor-In-Chief Arnab Goswami while appearing on Nation First.

Described by director Shivam Nair (Naam Shabana and Special Ops) as a fascinating story about hostage rescue with John playing an interesting role, the edge-of-the-seat drama is all set to release on the big screens on March 14 on the occasion of Holi. John features as diplomat JP Singh, who steps in to rescue an Indian woman named Uzma, played by Sadia Khateeb of Raksha Bandhan fame, from Pakistan. He described diplomacy as "something he loves" and how excited he is to bring that on the screen.

The Diplomat also pays homage to the late Sushma Swaraj, who, as then External Affairs Minister, sanctioned and oversaw the rescue op of Uzma with JP Singh, described her as the "daughter of India" and got her back after her ordeal in Islamabad for over two weeks in 2017.

When Arnab mentioned Sushma Swaraj and how she had a "major role" in the rescue op and whether her daughter Bansuri has seen The Diplomat, John said, "She saw the film. She broke down, cried and told me that she was going to see this film in theatres again when it releases." Revathy plays Swaraj in The Diplomat. John described her performance leading up to the climax as "impressive".

"It's like Argo but with high emotional quotient," John said while describing The Diplomat in a "similar space" as the Oscar-winning film by Ben Affleck. When asked about the NDA government at the time and whether PM Narendra Modi's character is also shown in The Diplomat, the actor shared, "It's basically about Sushma Swaraj and JP Singh and how they strategized not through war but diplomacy this operation. I had to understand JP as a person. He stays silent but he is always analysing you. Very simple on the face, but super intelligent and smart. A very complex character. Always strategising," John revealed while talking more character.

When Arnab asked him about making movies about India and its achievements, John said that he wanted to depict to the audiences how "cool" India is. "India is such a cool country. But I want to make that in an entertaining way," he said.

"It was a tough task to convince the studio of the project. They are getting braver with the response that The Diplomat is now getting. My next on Major Samar Toor is also on a similar theme," John added. The actor's another film, titled Tehran, with Manushi Chhillar also highlights and celebrates India's unsung heroes.
