DYK Kareena's 'Geet' From Jab We Met Is Based On Imtiaz Ali's Schoolmate, Who Reached Out To Him After Film's Success?

Jab We Met is one of the cult classic movies in Bollywood directed by Imtiaz Ali. Featuring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in the lead roles, the actress' character became one of her career best. In an interview, director Imtiaz Ali confessed that he based the character on a schoolmate.

Jab We Met's ‘Geet' is based on a real-life person? 

In an old interview, director Imtiaz Ali confessed that Jab We Met's character Geet is partly based on a schoolmate. He recalled him being friends with Geet's sisters - Roop and Rasna. He recollected, his character's namesake calling him following the success of the 2006 romance drama and in her signature, cheery way asking him about her feelings towards him.

Speaking at an event, Imtiaz Ali said, "When I was in school there were these sisters - Geet, Rasna and Roop. I was friends with Rasna and did not know Geet very well. Much later after the film was released, I got a message saying 'Hey I Am Geet'." The director initially thought that it is Kareena Kapoor talking to him as Geet, but he later called back on the number only to have his schoolmate answer. He recalled her saying, "Hey, a lot of people asked me about the movie. I am married now, and have two sons. So, when we were in school did you like me or something." The director's confession has now gone viral on social media, 18 years after the release of the movie.

Jab We Met reunion like none other at IIFA 2025

The recent International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) event in Jaipur saw long-lost friends and ex-lovers sharing the stage. The event witnessed Bollywood actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shahid Kapoor sharing the stage after so many years. The event also saw Animal star Bobby Deol joining the two on stage. Kareena and Shahid, who were once the “power couple” of Bollywood, had a very public and painful break-up during the end leg of the shooting of their iconic film Jab We Met. The industry witnessed the breaking of hearts of two of its young stars, and while the heartbreak may not have made a huge noise, it surely triggered the tectonic movements in the lives of both stars. Both Kareena and Shahid went on to settle with their respective spouses, Saif and Mira Rajput. While it was a dramatic break-up back in the day, the two actors have greatly evolved in the past 18 years, and have shown tremendous maturity.

The stage also saw Bobby Deol or Lord Bobby, as the Internet likes to call him, sharing a moment with Kareena and Shahid. It was a pure stroke of serendipity as the relations between Kareena and Bobby soured after Shahid came on board for Jab We Met, and Bobby was left high and dry. Bobby had once claimed in an interview that the director of the film Imtiaz Ali offered Jab We Met to him with Kareena as the female lead. However, before things could materialise at Bobby’s end, his role went to Shahid. Bobby had once accused Kareena of using her star power and influence to get her then-boyfriend on board for the film and take away the opportunity from the Animal star.
