Akshay Kumar starrer Sarfira has been receiving positive reviews from the audience. The movie, which is a Hindi remake of 2020 hit Tamil movie Soorarai Pottru, is inspired by the true events from the life of G. R. Gopinath, founder of Indian low-cost airline Simplifly Deccan, as described in his memoir, Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey. The movie's first-day business was heavily suffered because of a clash with Kamal Haasan's highly anticipated movie, Indian 2.
The movie had a "shockingly" low opening day. In fact, the numbers are lower than Akshay's previous movies Selfiee (₹2.55 crore) and Mission Raniganj (₹2.80 crore). On the first day at the domestic box office, Sarfira got only managed to earn ₹2.50 crore. Sarfira had an overall 13.08% Hindi Occupancy on Friday with the maximum reported in Chennai (22.50 per cent).
"The movie would need to a miraculous tunaround on Saturday and Sunday. The word of mouth is on the positive side, but it should convert into footfalls... It's a wait-and-watch situation right now," wrote trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
In Sudha Kongara's directorial, the movie traces the journey of Veer Mhatre (played by Akshay Kumar), who aims to introduce low-cost aviation carriers so that a vast majority of Indians can fly without straining their pockets. Inspired by the life of G. R. Gopinath, the founder of the Indian low-cost airline Simplifly Deccan. Gopinath served in the Indian Army as a captain and fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971-1972. He co-founded Deccan Aviation, a charter helicopter service, with two friends from the Indian Air Force in 1997. In 2003, he founded Air Deccan, a low-cost airline that later merged with Kingfisher Airlines in 2007.
