Sonu Nigam is one of the most well-known playback singers in Bollywood. With over 5,000 songs the singer has earned the tag of 'modern-day Rafi'. In his extensive career, Nigam has lent his voice to songs filmed by almost all actors in the Hindi film industry. At the Republic Plenary Summit, he was asked whether he modulates his voice to suit the actor featured in the song and about the process of singing.

The song's tempo is decided by the actor's personality. If the person is energetic, the voice of the singer needs to reflect that. Similarly, if the actor is laid back, the song has to reflect that. With Akshay Kumar seated in the audience, he cited the example of his song Pehli Pehli Baar Baliye filmed by the actor and shared an anecdote from its making. He recalled adding a 'spark' to the song to suit the actor.

Sonu Nigam also added that most times, the song itself assists the singer with the vocals. He cited the example of Kishore Kumar's legendary Musfir Ho Yaaron, and crooned the different variations of it on stage at India's biggest news event. He added, "When a singer listens to many songs and gains years of experience, they can hear the song before it is sung."

Nigam also shared the logic behind songmaking by using his songs Suraj Hua Madhham and Soniyo as examples, enthralling the guests.

In the same conversation, the 51-year-old singer opined on whether a person who is not blessed with a quintessentially melodious voice can gain the skill through training. Replying to this Sonu Nigam shared, "If an art form is introduced at the right age, then maybe you will not become an expert, but you can get a decent understanding of it. People outside India are more melodious because they receive training to play certain instruments from their childhood. So, if in our country also music is taught in schools from an early age it would come of great use later."
