Vishal told the publication, “I should have put my foot down in Rangoon and said I don’t care about the release date. The VFX is not right in the final scene… That kind of pressure. Everyone’s like, ‘No, it will be a huge loss…’ At that time, you should become Sanjay Leela Bhansali, no matter how much loss there is, things wouldn’t go like that.”
Vishal Bhardwaj admits getting overconfident after Haider’s success
In the same conversation, Vishal also discussed the budget of Rangoon and how he accepted a lesser amount because of being overconfident. He said the film needed ₹70 crores but he settled for ₹35 crores as he felt overconfident about himself after Hider’s success. He added “You regret those decisions. I don’t regret my creative thought of Rangoon. It was very pure, very unique. But, of course, a film that should be made in Rs 70 crore, and I have decided to make it in Rs 35 crore, then I am foolish.”

Adding to this, the director also expresses that he should have ‘disowned’ the film. He cited the example of Shekhar Kapur and mentioned, “I should have learnt something from Shekhar Kapur and disowned the movie.” He added that even the VFX supervisor on Rangoon ‘ditched him’ because he had his own short film to make. He concluded by saying, “I don’t blame others for my own mistakes.”
