Kajal Aggarwal is gearing up for the release of her film Satyabhama, which will release on June 7. She also featured in Kamal Haasan-led Indian 2 which will release on July 12. The actress, in a new interview, shared why actresses in regional films do not get pivotal or meatier roles. She admitted that there is a stereotype attached to married actresses in South Indian films. 

It’s the makers who need to start exploring more genres, says Kajal Aggarwal

In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Kajal Aggarwal was asked the reason why actresses in the regional film industry do not get as meaty a role as women in Bollywood. The actress asserted that it is not a ‘cultural’ thing for married actors to get sidelined in the industry. 

She said, “We still have a little bit of stereotype attached, I am hoping we get rid of it soon. It’s this generation of actors who are married and work after having children. I don’t think it’s a cultural thing, I think the audience is accepting of films like that (Tumhari Sulu) if the makers start providing them. It’s the makers who need to start exploring more genres.”

Kajal Aggarwal cites Nayanthara’s example for modern-day actress

In the same conversation, Kajal argued that things are changing in the industry slowly. She shared that actresses would take meatier roles if they were offered. She cited Nayanthara’s example for the same. She added, “If we are offered, we would take meatier roles, maybe even the pivotal roles in films. Things are changing. Like Nayanthara, for example, I love how she conducts her filmography.” 

Kajal added, “I love her choices. She is an exception and gets these parts on her terms and conditions. So that’s great. But I am happy to be working at this juncture of my life in the industry today because I’ve got kindness and compassion from my directors.”
