Sharmila Tagore breaks silence on Saif Ali Khan’s divorce from Amrita Singh: That stage was not nice

Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore recently appeared on a popular chat show. The mother-son duo spoke at length about their family dynamics and their experience in the industry. In conversation, the veteran actress recalled the time when Saif Ali Khan decided to split with his first wife Amrita Singh. 

Sharmila Tagore recalls not a ‘harmonious time’ following Saif Ali Khan’s divorce

In conversation, Saif Ali Khan recalled the time he got married to Amrita Singh in 1991, without the knowledge of his parents. He remembered his mother advising him not to get married and he did it nevertheless. He recalled Sharmila Tagore’s reaction, “A big tear fell out of her eye and she started crying. She said, 'You've really hurt me.” 

The actor then recalled the time when he decided to part ways with his first wife. He explained that his mother was with him and supported his decision when he decided to tell her. Sharmila also spoke about the time and called it ‘difficult’. She expressed her remorse for the divorce and stated that the family not only lost Amrita Singh but also Saif’s children Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. She recalled, “When you are together for such a long time and you have such lovely children, then no break up is easy. Then it is not harmonious… I know it is difficult to have harmony at that stage, everybody is hurt… so that stage was not nice but I tried. But that's water under the bridge, she needed time to cool down.” Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh parted ways in 2004. The actor then tied the knot with Kareena Kapoor in 2012. The couple have two sons Taimur and Jeh Ali Khan. 

Sharmila Tagore reveals Saif Ali Khan caused anxiety as a child 

In the same conversation, Sharmila Tagore also shared funny anecdotes from the Hum Tum actor’s childhood. Narrating the story, Sharmila said: "I wouldn't say he was a brat but he would cause anxiety all around. You never knew what he was up to. Breaking the glass happened accidentally because they were playing." 

"So, there was this glass door, I was on the other side of the corridor and he came through, I could see the glass shards falling around him. And I knew I couldn't get there on time to see and do anything heroic. And it was just falling and missing him," added the Mausam actress. The Dil Chahta Hai actor laughingly added: "It was like Amar Chitra Katha, gifted kids, glass everywhere unscathed."
