In the pre-Christmas weekend, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom emerged as the front-runner among new releases, securing the top spot at the box office. The DC and Warner Bros. superhero sequel, featuring Jason Momoa, raked in an estimated $28.1 million during its initial three days of release across 3,706 locations in North America. Projections indicate that by Monday, it is set to reach around $40 million in domestic ticket sales.

Despite various newcomers, such as the family-friendly animated film Migration, the R-rated romantic comedy Anyone But You, the wrestling tragedy The Iron Claw, and the ghostly tearjerker All of Us Strangers, this pre-holiday frame at the box office is notably subdued. It seems that potential moviegoers had other priorities than heading to the cinemas.

The timing, with Christmas Eve falling on a prime weekend day, posed a challenge for Hollywood and theatres. However, anticipation is building for Christmas Day, bringing in more releases like the big-budget musical adaptation of The Color Purple, Michael Mann’s racing film Ferrari, and George Clooney’s take on the rowing drama The Boys in the Boat.

In a significant display of dominance, Warner Bros. holds the second spot with Wonka and a major Christmas release, The Color Purple. Wonka, in its second weekend, accumulated an estimated $17.7 million, reaching a total domestic earning of $83.6 million by Monday.
