Barbie becomes highest-grossing film of 2023, beats The Super Mario Bros Movie

Barbie fever refuses to die down even after months of Greta Gerwrig’s pink spectacle release. While it broke several records at the North America box office, the Margot Robbie starrer has dominated the worldwide business too. The film has surpassed The Super Mario Bros Movie to become the highest-grossing movie of the year globally as per Variety

Barbie reigns supreme worldwide 

As reported by Variety, on September 2, Barbie became the highest-grossing film of 2023 with a staggering $1.36 billion collection. Out of this, the film has minted $600 million in North America alone.

Meanwhile, it has raked $760 million overseas, amassing an astounding total. The film has dethroned the collection of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which amounts to $1.35 million globally 

All records made by Barbie so far 

Ever since its release, the pink-laden feminist tale has been smashing box office records. With a collection of $162 million in July, the film holds the record for the best debut of the year in the US. The movie has also surpassed the lifetime collection of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($1.341 billion) to become the highest-grossing Warner Bros film ever.

It has already become the highest-grossing film by a female director. The film also registered the highest-grossing opening weekend of the year with $162 million collection. As per Forbes, the Margot Robbie starrer would have done even better had the film not been banned in Kuwait, Algeria and Vietnam. The film is still running in theatres and is all set to get its digital premiere on September 5. 

How is the other half of Barbenheimer doing? 

Released on the same day, it is widely believed that both Oppenheimer and Barbie benefited from the double-feature clash. The global collection of Oppenheimer sits at $200 million, as per Forbes. While Barbie has dominated the global box office, the Cillian Murphy film performed much better than it did in India. While Barbie struggled to breach ₹50 crore mark and minted only ₹45.5 crore, Oppenheimer earned ₹130.58 crore, as per Sacnilk
