Greta Gerwig's Barbie is currently in the last leg of its theatrical run. However, despite the time elapsed since its July 21 release, the film shows no signs of slowing down in its quest to collect accolade after accolade. The Greta Gerwig directorial has broken another record, this time involving the 2012 film The Avengers.

3 things you need to know

  • Greta Gerwig's Barbie released in theatres on July 21 in a double feature alongside Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.
  • The Avengers (2012) grossed $1.5 billion worldwide and was the third-highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release.
  • Barbie, still in its theatrical run, has minted $1.4 billion and is the highest-grossing film of the year so far.

Barbie beats The Avengers in US

Till very recently, the Joss Whedon helmed 2012 film The Avengers was the eleventh highest-grossing film, domestically. That record now officially belongs to Barbie. Barbie's current box office earnings stand at $626 million which places it at the eleventh rank in the list of all-time highest-grossers at the US box office. To make it into the coveted top 10 list, the film is required to earn $28 million more so as to surpass the domestic collections of 2015 release Jurassic World. Jurassic World's domestic collection stands at $653 million.

Barbie has many accolades to its credit

Barbie has become the highest-grossing film of the year with $1.4 billion and counting as its worldwide collection, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie which earned $1.35 billion. Barbie has also emerged as the fourteenth biggest global release of all time. For context, films Frozen II with $1.453 billion in global collection and Top Gun: Maverick with $1.495 billion in global collection stand just ahead of it.
