Missy Elliott is one of the known figures in the music industry. Popularly known as the 'First Lady of Hip Hop,' an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer, has many accolades to her name. Now, she has added a new feather to her hat because she has become the first hip-hop artist to have a song beamed to a planet.

Missy Elliott's song transmitted to Venus

Missy has been in the entertainment industry for 30 years and given numerous chartbuster tracks. Honouring her legacy, NASA, the American space agency, gave her debut solo single a one-way ticket to space. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory sent the lyrics of her song The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) into space to one of the Earth's evil twins - Venus. Notably, this is the first time hip-hop has been transmitted into orbit.  This was done via the 122-foot-wide Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio dish antenna stationed at the Deep Space Network (DSN) Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California.

"Both space exploration and Missy Elliott's art have been about pushing boundaries. Missy has a track record of infusing space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting," NASA said in a statement.

We just went out of this world: Missy Elliot

Soon after NASA announced the same, Missy took to her X handle to express gratitude. She shared a video performing the same song on the stage and penned a note. "YOOO this is crazy! We just went #OutOfThisWorld with @NASA and sent the FIRST hip hop song into space through the Deep Space Network.  My song “The Rain” has officially been transmitted all the way to Venus, the planet that symbolizes strength, beauty and empowerment. The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning."

Until now, NASA had only sent one other song into space, and that is Across the Universe by the Beatles. It was sent to the North Star in 2008.
