Netflix's latest crime drama Adolescence has become a hot topic since its release and has won over Indian audiences, including celebrities like Alia Bhatt , Anurag Kashyap, and Hansal Mehta. The series features the troubling impact of online influence on teenagers. Actor and co-writer Stephen Graham has now responded to its growing popularity in India.
Stephen Graham reacts to Adolescence series’ popularity in India
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Stephen Graham discussed the global impact of the show. When Adolescence premiered on Netflix on March 14, Graham expected it to gain attention in the UK. However, he was not prepared for the series to resonate so strongly in places he hadn’t predicted, particularly India. Within days, the show climbed to the top of Netflix’s global most-watched list, and the outpouring reaction from Hindi viewers left him surprised.
He stated that, “I got a text from a mate of mine, telling me how big Adolescence is in India.” He further shared his first response saying, “And my first response was, ‘Hold on… did you say India?! Did I hear you correctly?’ Apparently, it’s really striking a nerve there."
Stephen Graham also shared his thoughts on how the series evolved. “It was very colloquial. But it’s like we dropped a stone into this pond, and the ripple effect it’s produced has been unbelievable.”

Is Adolescence based on a real-life story?
The four-part Netflix series has achieved an outstanding 99 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as a masterpiece. The compelling drama centres on a 13-year-old boy accused of murder and the profound impact it has on his life and those close to him. Graham, who co-wrote the series, also portrays the boy’s father.
Many initially speculated the series was loosely based on real events due to its resemblance to recent high-profile cases. However, Stephen Graham disclosed that the concept came to him during a car journey after an awards show.
