George R.R. Martin shares update on the upcoming seasons of HOTD

George R.R. Martin is the author of Fire & Blood, the book on which the House of The Dragon series is based. The writer provided fans with an update on his recent trip to the United Kingdom in a blog post on Wednesday, December 6.

He penned that he visited the filming location of the Game of Thrones spin-off series and spent a few days getting ready for the upcoming seasons, which HBO has not yet officially renewed.

Martin wrote, “I also spent two days locked in a room with [showrunner] Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon. They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done.”

It makes sense that the creative team would be outlining a whole story arc for House of the Dragon, given that it was previously reported earlier this year that the show would run for three to four seasons. In addition, George R.R. Martin mentioned that he saw early drafts of the first two episodes of the upcoming second season of HOTD.

What is House of the Dragon about?

Set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros following the Seven Kingdoms' unification. This occurred long before Daenerys was born, but it provides additional context for her family's history beyond what was briefly mentioned in GoT.
