Hospital authorities share a statement after Vijayakanth's death
The MIOT Hospital in Chennai issued a statement confirming the demise of the DMDK leader. "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023," the statement read.
Salaar actress Sriya Reddy paid tribute to the actor on her social media handle. She took to X and wrote, "Rest in peace #Vijayakanth sir ! You’ll never be forgotten."
Vijayakanth, the DMDK chief, was earlier hospitalised for a routine health check-up amid earlier treatment for a respiratory ailment. Known for his film career spanning 154 movies, he transitioned into politics, founding the DMDK. He served two terms as an MLA and notably led the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. Recent health concerns led him to reduce his political involvement.

Vijayakanth's health condition
Earlier this month, Vijayakanth underwent treatment at a private hospital in Chennai and was later discharged a couple of weeks ago. However, later on Tuesday evening, he was admitted again due to concerns about his health. A medical bulletin issued by the private hospital stated, "DMDK president Vijayakanth was brought to the hospital after 15 days for a routine health check-up. He is in good health. After the check-up, he will return home by Thursday."

Vijayakanth’s political stint
Emerging as a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu politics, Vijayakanth earned an MLA seat in the 2006 Assembly elections with an 8 percent vote share. He further served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. However, his party faced setbacks and experienced a decline in influence within the state due to his health issues.
