Nani's Decision To Reject Rajinikanth Starrer Vettaiyan Lauded As Film Struggles At Box Office

Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan has finally hit the screens on October 10 and is getting a lukewarm response from the audience. Released on the occasion of Dussehra and Vettaiyan features an ensemble cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan , Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier, Rana Daggubati, Dushara Vijayan, and Ritika Singh. This sci-fi action also marks Amitabh Bachchan's debut in Tamil cinema. According to Sacnilk, the film opened to an impressive ₹31.7 crore in India but with mixed reviews. Following this, recently, there’s buzz ignited with fans praising Natural Star for turning down the chance to be part of Thalaivar’s project.

Five days after Rajini’s big release, a new report surfaced claiming that Nani was originally offered a role in Vettaiyan. Many social media reports echoed further that Nani declined the opportunity after listening to the script.

This led to renewed discussions online, suggesting that Nani’s decision to decline the offer was justified.

After the release, Rajinikanth’s performance received widespread praise, but critics pointed out that the other characters were not well-developed. While many enjoyed the film, the pacing and storytelling decisions may not suit everyone. Some suggested that actors like Rana, Amitabh Bachchan , Fahadh Faasil, and Manju Warrier didn’t get roles that truly showcased their abilities.

Fans have weighed in on social media, applauding Nani’s decision. One fan wrote on X, “Nani dodged a bullet! Rajini is amazing, but no one else had a proper role in Vettaiyan,” while another commented, “Fahadh did well, but the film was all about Rajinikanth. Glad Nani didn’t take it.”

There is also speculation about whether Nani was offered Fahadh’s role or Rana Daggubati’s villainous character, Natraj. Some reports claim Nani was initially considered for Natraj but turned it down due to the lack of depth in the character. Fans seem to agree, with one saying, “Rana’s role was underwhelming. Nani would have been wasted in that character too.”

Moreover, Natural Star Nani is enjoying a successful streak with three consecutive hits—Dasara, Hi Nanna, and Saripodha Sanivaaram. He’s known for his sharp judgement in selecting stories, a skill once again proven by his decision regarding Rajinikanth’s latest film Vettaiyan. Nani is currently working on two projects, HIT 3 directed by Sailesh Kolanu, and an untitled film under Srikanth Odela’s direction.
