These celebrities— Aamir Khan to Rajinikanth—are collectively referred to as the "kings of the box office." Their films bring in between Rs 400 and Rs 500 crores each. However, there's the uncrowned king of South cinema, whose fame grows by the day. At the box office, his seven consecutive films have been enormous hits crossing the mark of Rs 200 crore each.

Given that each of his last seven films has brought in over Rs 200 crore, Thalapathy Vijay has solidified his status as one of India's most bankable stars. DNA India claimed that Mersal, which brought in Rs 220 crore at the box office, was the start of this incredible feat. Sarkar, starring Vijay, is said to have brought in Rs 252 crore at the box office in 2018.

Thalapathy is Vijay's 2019 release Bigil made a total of Rs 295 crore at the box office, while Master, which opened in theaters in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, did remarkably well, grossing about Rs 223 crore. Beast, starring Vijay, is said to have brought in Rs 216 crore at the box office in 2022. Thalapathy had a successful start to 2023 with Varisu earning Rs 297 crore.

Vijay: The biggest contributor to the Tamil film industry in 2023

Regarding the box office performance of two of the biggest Tamil releases of 2023, Rajinilanth's Jailer and VIjay's Leo, there is still much debate. Notably, the box office performance of Jailer and Leo in certain important markets demonstrated that Vijay's brand presents a serious threat to even Rajinikanth outside of Tamil Nadu, gradually occupying the territory that was once Rajini's exclusive stronghold. 

When Leo ended its theatrical run with a total sum of Rs 623 crore worldwide, Vijay came out as the biggest contributor to the Tamil film industry in 2023, with Varisu and Leo taking in a combined Rs 900 Cr+ at the global box office.
