Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan witnessed a box office clash after almost 18 years as their old classics Muthu (1995) and Aalavandhan (2001) re-released in cinemas today, December 8. According to reports, Rajinikanth's film has been sold out compared to Kamal Haasan's Aalavandhan.

According to reports, Kamal Haasan starrer Aalavandhan is struggling to get decent occupancy on its re-release despite intense promotions by the makers, while Rajinikanth's film is all sold out.
The re-release has also started a fan war with many tweeting in favour of Rajinikanth's film and its performance at the box office.
What do we know about Muthu?
Muthu, directed by KS Ravikumar, is a rural entertainer. The film features Rajinikanth and Meena in the lead roles. The film first released in the year 1995 and clashed with Kamal Haasan's Kuruthi Punal, reportedly also dominating the latter at the box office even then. The film, a remake of the 1994 Malayalam film Thenmavin Kombath, became a silver jubilee hit. The film also won many awards for Rajinikanth for his performance. It was also released in Japan in the Japanese language and reportedly became the highest-grossing Indian film in the country until recently released RRR surpassed its earnings.

What do we know about Aalavandhan?
Aalavandhan, directed by Suresh Krissna is a psychological action thriller film, starring Kamal Haasan in dual roles. It also starred Raveena Tandon and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles. The film was simultaneously shot in Hind with the title Abhay. However, it was a commercial failure. Yet the film won the National Award for Best Special effects.
