Nag Ashwin’s highly anticipated film Kalki 2898 AD is set to release in theaters on June 27. Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani, this sci-fi action-drama is one of the year's most-awaited films. The Telangana government has approved additional shows and hiked ticket prices for the first eight days of release in the state.
A representative from the film’s team announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the first show of Kalki 2898 AD will be held at 5:30 AM in Telangana on the release day. They stated, “Prabhas Kalki film ticket price hike, Telangana government approves extra shows.”
The representative added, “Ticket price hike is allowed for 8 days from the 27th of this month to the 4th of July. An increase of Rs. 70 in regular theaters and Rs. 100 in multiplexes is allowed. On the 27th, the show starts at 5:30.” They also shared a copy of the permit.
While fans were thrilled to have the opportunity to watch the film so early on Thursday, many expressed concern about the increased prices, which would be ₹377 for a benefit show at a single screen, ₹495 for a show at a multiplex, and ₹265 and ₹413 for regular screenings.
One fan noted that the Telugu film industry is already facing challenges due to early OTT release windows and that higher ticket prices might not be the best solution. They commented, “Telugu movie industry is facing a tough time with early OTT releases. Adding exorbitant ticket prices for films like Kalki is a big no! Who will come to theaters if this continues? Let's keep our cinema affordable and accessible, like it’s always been. Don’t make movies a luxury.”
Set in a dystopian future, Kalki 2898 AD follows a bounty hunter named Bhairava (Prabhas), a pregnant woman called SUM-80 (Deepika) on the run, Ashwatthama (Amitabh) waiting to aid Kalki at the end of the Kali Yuga, and Supreme Yaskin (Kamal) with his own plans. The film features a Kasi where the Ganga has dried up, a refuge called Shambala, and the Complex, the only place with abundant resources.
