Varun Tej's last outing to the cinemas, Operation Valentine, was a box office debacle. Despite being mounted on a hefty budget and being appropriately stylised, the film failed to make an impact, neither on the audience, nor in terms of its collections. If reports are to be believed, an injury sustained on the sets of the film, may just land the actor in surgery now.

Varun Tej to undergo surgery?

Incidentally, Varun Tej's character in Operation Valentine, Rudra, undergoes a massive accident which forms the fore-grounder to the premise of the film as well as the character's redemption arch. Operation Valentine was heavy on action, considering its Air Force based premise, which is when Varun Tej presumably ended up sustaining an injury. Though the injury has of course healed externally, as per a Gulte report, the same now needs surgery to reverse the impact.

It is worth mentioning that an official confirmation on his surgery, is yet to come through. However, if these reports are true, this will inevitably impact the progress on his next film Matka. Separately, Matka, is rumoured to be based on the life of gambler Ratan Khatri. The Karuna Kumar directorial will reportedly span a timeline of 24 years between 1958 and 1985 and will feature Varun Tej in as many as four distinct looks to reflect the same. Much of the film will be set in Vizag.
