We all are aware that eating a balanced amount of protein is essential to maintain good health. According to Healthline, an adult requires at least 50 grams of protein per day, however, it differentiates by age, sex, health status and activities.
What does a protein contain?
Healthline explains, “Proteins are made up of amino acids that join together to form long chains. You can think of a protein as a string of beads in which each bead is an amino acid. There are 20 amino acids that help form the thousands of different proteins in your body. Proteins do most of their work in the cell and perform various jobs.”
Health risks
However, while protein, when consumed responsibly, is good for health, consuming it carelessly can lead to severe health conditions such as:
Weight gain
It is always advisable to maintain a healthy weight. Consuming too much protein that a body can use for muscle building could turn excess protein calories into fat which will lead to unwanted weight gain.
Heart disease
Over time it has been proven that red and processed meats are linked to high cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk. Be mindful while consuming protein to avoid heart disease.
Fatty liver disease
Similarly how excess protein calories could expose you to heart disease, consuming too much protein may lead to fatty liver disease.
Weak bone health
Taking too much protein may lead to a loss of calcium through urine which might lead to increasing the risk of exposure to osteoporosis. Healthline confirms, “High-protein diets leach calcium from bones in order to counteract increased acidity in the blood.”
Digestive risk
Expect constipation when you consume too much protein.
