With a lot of debate going around paid menstrual leaves, there is no denying about how that time of the month is always inconvenient. While the degree of inconvenience may vary for everyone, it is no fun for most people. From absurd food cravings to sleep disturbances, most of these things start even before your cycle begins.

Firstly, it is important to know that period cramps are caused by contractions in your uterus. These are triggered by changes in your body’s hormone levels, particularly prostaglandins. While menstruating, the uterus contracts and sheds its lining. It is then released as blood through your vagina.

If you are someone who goes through extreme cramping during periods, here are a few effective things that you can do to eradicate pain and restlessness.

Use a heating pad

Using a heating pad on your abdomen can help relax the muscles which ultimately releases cramps. Heat can also boost circulation in your abdomen. Many research shows that heating pads can help relieve period cramps and be more effective than anything.

Eating a healthy diet is another way to relieve period pain. Certain vitamins and minerals have been suggested to help in reducing cramps. Make sure you eat foods that are rich in vitamin B1 and magnesium. These include nuts and seeds, whole grains, legumes, including beans, lentils and chickpeas, spinach, cauliflower, kale, and much more.
