International Women’s Day is an annual celebration that takes place every year on March 8. This year, it falls on a Saturday. On this special occasion, people come together to commemorate the achievements of women while advocating for gender equality.

As we prepare to celebrate this much-anticipated day under the theme “Accelerate Action” for gender equality, with events, workshops, and talks aimed at highlighting the importance and challenges women face daily, we’ve curated a list of essential health checkups women should undergo in their 20s.

  • Pelvic exam and pap smear: Regardless of age, women after the age of 21 are recommended to take a pap smear- a test to look for the signs of cervical cancer every 3 years. 
  • Breast cancer screening: A concerning issue amongst women, ensure to take breast cancer screen as you grow older or have a family history.
  • Two physical examinations in the 20s: Head-to-toe examination by a doctor.
  • Cholesterol test: Women after the age of 20 must take cholesterol baseline screening to avoid coronary heart disease.
  • Eye examination: Visit a doctor if you have frequent headache experiences, it may be the cause of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
  • Blood pressure test: The normal blood pressure is between 90/60 and 120/80 millimetres of mercury (mmHg), if your blood pressure is higher or lower than the aforementioned number, ensure to take a test to avoid health problems such as high blood pressure and hypertension.
  • Dental test: Visit your dentist once a year.
  • Immunizations: Lastly, we may brush it off, but it's important to get the flu vaccine at least once a year.
