In a recent development, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 9 deaths and over 57 illnesses have been linked to a Listeria outbreak associated with Boar's Head deli meats in the US.

The illnesses were first reported in late May and have continued into August, marking the largest listeriosis outbreak since the 2011 outbreak.

What is listeria?

Where does listeria come from?

Listeria can be found in water, soil and intestines of some animals. But since some don't show any symptoms it gets transferred to refrigerated, processed meats that can last for several years. CDC details, “Products sold at deli counters, especially those sliced or prepared at the deli, can be contaminated with Listeria. Listeria spreads easily among deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food. Deli products are kept refrigerated, but refrigeration does not kill Listeria.”

Who is at risk?

Explaining the risk of the prevailing listeria outbreak, the US Food and Drug Administration details that young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women and others with weakened immune systems are at high risk of listeria.

What are the symptoms of listeria?

“Although healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” outlines the US Food and Drug Administration.

How common is listeria?

How to stay away from listeria?

A detailed guideline was released by the CDC on how to stay away from listeria. The agency suggests, “Do not eat recalled deli products. Throw them away or contact stores about returns. People who are at higher risk for getting sick with Listeria, such as those who are pregnant, are aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system, should always avoid eating meats sliced at deli counters, unless heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot just before serving. Clean your refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have touched sliced deli meats.”
