The link between sedentary activities and dementia risk

A 2022 study examined the correlation between sedentary activities, such as prolonged television watching and computer use, and dementia risk. Results indicated that increased time spent on passive activities like TV watching was associated with a higher risk of dementia, regardless of physical activity levels. Conversely, engaging in cognitive activities on computers was associated with a reduced risk, suggesting that not all screen time is detrimental.

Moreover, frequent screen use has been linked to changes in brain anatomy. Symptoms of digital dementia mirror those of traditional dementia, including short-term memory loss, difficulty in word recall, and challenges with multitasking.

What are the potential negative effects?

Limit phone notifications: Reducing notifications can prevent excessive screen time. Mute or eliminate non-urgent alerts to help minimize distractions.

Set time limits on passive media: Use apps to restrict time spent on non-interactive activities like scrolling. Customizing these limits based on individual needs can help manage screen exposure.

For parents: Discuss screen time moderation with your children and lead by example. Track and adjust family screen habits to promote healthier usage patterns.

While conclusive scientific evidence linking excessive screen time directly to “digital dementia” remains limited, it is essential to balance digital engagement with other aspects of life for overall cognitive health. Being mindful of how technology is used and incorporating these practical tips can contribute to better mental well-being.
